Puyallup trees: valley, hillside and South Hill
Puyallup is really two landscapes: the flat Puyallup River valley around downtown, and the forested hills that climb to South Hill. That split shapes what goes wrong with trees here:
Wet valley ground
Near the Puyallup River and Clarks Creek the ground stays wet much of the year, and roots tend to stay shallow. Trees in soaked soil can tip over at the root plate in a windstorm even when the trunk looks healthy. Parts of the valley are also regulated as wetlands, stream buffers or flood areas.
Cottonwoods and alders
Black cottonwoods along the river and in older valley yards grow fast and get very tall, and their wood is brittle. They're known for dropping big limbs, sometimes on calm summer days. Red alders are short-lived and often decline from the inside out.
Hillside lots
The slopes between downtown and South Hill hold a lot of mature Douglas fir, cedar and big-leaf maple. Steep slopes are among the critical areas where Puyallup requires a permit to remove a tree, and the roots help hold the hillside, so it's worth checking with the city before you cut.
South Hill greenbelts
Many South Hill subdivisions back onto greenbelts of native conifers. Trees along a freshly cleared edge face wind they never grew up with. Remember that greenbelts and habitat areas can be regulated even when the tree is right behind your fence.
Puyallup areas we cover
